Sedation Dentistry |
|
| |
Nervous and stressed out when going to a dentist? Sedation dentistry lets you become drowsy and, in most cases, sleep right through your dental procedure. You are given an analgesic or sedative about an hour before the procedure - either in a pill form or intravenously. You become extremely relaxed and can drift into a sleep-like state. When you wakeup after surgery you probaby won't remember your procedure at all. |

Anxiety over a dental procedure can also be soothed through the use of nitrous oxide, a sweet-smelling gas made up of nitrogen and oxygen (also known as "laughing gas"). Nitrous oxide is given through a mask that fits snugly over your nose about five minutes before the dental procedure. It is a safe and well established method to deal with dental anxiety and discomfort. It calms and has a comforting effect even though you stay awake and remain in control through a dental procedure that still allows you to communicate. It also tends to lessen anxiety, raise the pain threshold, reduces an overactive gag reflex and makes time pass more quickly. |
